BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwiches
Ingredients
For the Pulled Pork:
- 3-4 lbs pork shoulder (or pork butt)
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional for heat)
- 1 cup chicken broth (or water)
- 1 cup BBQ sauce (plus more for serving)
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Sandwiches:
- 6-8 brioche or hamburger buns
- 1 cup coleslaw (optional but recommended)
- Extra BBQ sauce for topping
- Pickles (optional)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Pork
- In a small bowl, mix salt, black pepper, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
- Rub the pork shoulder with olive oil, then evenly coat it with the spice mixture.
2. Cook the Pork

Slow Cooker Method:
- Place the pork in the slow cooker and pour in chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and BBQ sauce.
- Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or high for 4-5 hours, until the meat is tender and easily shreds with a fork.

Oven Method:
- Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).
- Place pork in a roasting pan with chicken broth, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and BBQ sauce.
- Cover with foil and roast for 4-5 hours, basting occasionally.

Instant Pot Method:
- Cut pork into large chunks.
- Add to the Instant Pot with the liquids and cook on High Pressure for 60-70 minutes.
- Allow natural release for 15 minutes before shredding.
3. Shred and Sauce the Pork
- Remove the cooked pork and shred it using two forks.
- Mix in extra BBQ sauce and let it sit for a few minutes to soak up the flavors.
4. Assemble the Sandwiches
- Toast the buns lightly for extra texture.
- Pile shredded BBQ pork onto the bottom bun.
- Top with coleslaw and pickles if desired.
- Drizzle with more BBQ sauce and cover with the top bun.
